City police target eight-minute response time

KUALA LUMPUR, Friday 17 December 2010 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur police motorcycle patrol unit targets to arrive at crime scenes within eight minutes of receiving reports.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the unit took after the concept of the mobile patrol vehicles (MPV) used to assist existing patrol cars, especially when facing traffic congestion enroute to their destination.

"This will allow the police response time to drop from 10 minutes to eight by overcoming obstacles such as traffic congestion."

He said this to reporters after the closing of the Frontliners In-Service Training Course and launching of the first Response Team, as well as the Kuala Lumpur police official Facebook page.

According to Zulkifli, the success of the unit would help improve the quality of police service in combating crime more efficiently and effectively.

He said the nation's capital was currently safe, but various measures had to be taken to boost security, which included the enhancing motorcycle unit.

"Besides acquiring 36 motorcycles, more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras would be installed in areas prone to crime like drug activities and prostitution," he said.

Zulkifli said this was to curb crime by immediately conducting crime- prevention operations.

"For instance, we had received information on a drug nest at the Sri Perak Flats in Sentul and I ordered a special team to the place to wipe out the activity immediately."

Zulkifli said city police were constantly in contact with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), non-governmental organisations and the local community in efforts to improve safety in the city.

Earlier at the same event, he launched Kuala Lumpur police's Facebook site http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/poliskl which aims to facilitate sharing of information between the police and public.

"The community can post their comments or complaints, and report on various matters such as crime and missing persons," he added.
