Although the school has yet to be notified by the authorities about the matter or given a deadline, Tan said it was better for them to be prepared for it now.
"Apart from the road-widening project, we also want to relocate because the existing premises are too small to accommodate our student population," he said recently.
SJK (C) Yang Cheng is located right next to Jalan Teluk Kumbar, a narrow two-way busy road that links Balik Pulau and Bayan Lepas.
The school's two-storey building houses 240 pupils.
Tan said it was a hassle for parents to pick up and drop off their children at the school's small entrance.
He said the school had already been promised a piece of land by the state government and the board was in the process of getting the approval from the Education Ministry to relocate.
The board, he said, presented a memorandum on the matter to Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong last Saturday.
"Building the new school will cost us around RM3.5 million...hopefully, we will get some help from the government too," he added.
Wee who was in Balik Pulau last Saturday to open the southwest district's Chinese primary school speech competition at SJK (C) Yu Chye in Kuala Sungai Pinang here, said primary school pupils today must be trained in reasoning, innovative and creative thinking and soft skills.
"The education system could no longer start equipping them with such abilities only after they reach higher levels of education.
"Content knowledge, a new emphasis in our education system, will teach pupils problem-solving skills.
"A speech competition like this will help pupils hone their soft skills like how to communicate and express themselves effectively."
Wee sponsored RM3,000 for the competition which was organised for the seventh time by the Balik Pulau MCA division.
