Clean Zone: An Attractive Incentive?

Previous years have seen some efforts by the local state governments to declare some areas as 'safe' areas, well protected by the police force and claimed to be crime-free. If that is not yet helping to increase the prices of properties in prominent areas, another sort of campaign is being used to make things more attractive and interesting.

The Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) Clean Zone programme is a reflection of mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman's commitment towards making neighbourhoods safe, attractive and vibrant. The project was endorsed by the state local government executive council and started in Section 52, and now enlarging its radius to SS2 Town Park and Dataran Sunway. While the concern of the council may be the hygiene and image of the area, it also attempts to make the area more alluring with infrastructure upgrades which includes the building of a basketball court in Zone 19, with the intention of giving the community an outlet for recreation during the weekends away from video games.

In terms of property investment, a well-kept area will certainly be a boost to make the homes within the area more in demand, and will further increase the prices of property in the area which is densely populated and already in high demands for at least the past 10 years. Those areas are already well planned in many ways, with schools within the residential areas, commercial lots for your local grocery shopping or kopi tiam where you may get a glass of coffee and some food during lunch and dinner, and also encouraging some other businesses such as music schools, dance schools, florists and a local car repair workshop.

When these are not enough to hike up prices of the homes any further, a cleanliness programme certainly goes a long way to boost the numbers, especially if a potential buyer had once been put off by a mouse running across the streets near eateries and market areas.

The council is expected to do a lot more to increase the radius of the cleanliness campaign, especially towards the PJ Old Town, Sungai Way and Kampung Chempaka areas. Some of these areas have very old houses and flats, and may be living with rats since there are local morning markets in these areas. Now, who will not welcome the heroic move by the council to clean up the neighbourhood?
